A Taste for Travel

Is there any greater joy in life than cooking? It is one of the greatest gifts of all time. Earth-grown ingredients turned into savory dishes. Not only does it allow one to create flavors and colors, it also creates community. There is nothing quite like sitting down to eat with family and friends. All of our senses are engaged in cooking. Our eyes, nose, ears, mouth and hands all get their turn sharing the magic of food. And it all comes together as our hearts are warmed in fellowship with one another. 

 

One of the reasons I love to cook is because of aroma. Smelling has been an extension of my soul since I can remember. There are so many delightful scents around us. Inspired by my mother, I am drawn to the mantra, “Try something new!” Like the color wheel, there is a never ending combination of flavors and ingredients. What joy to discover a new medley of ingredients that sing and dance in ones mouth. Food is poetry for ones soul.

Moreover, food and travel are natural cousins. It is hard to encounter one without the other. How often our tastebuds take us on a journey of flavor and satisfaction. And you don’t even have to leave your kitchen table. Likewise, when we take a trip, one of the joys is to encounter a dish of pleasing colors and delicious flavors. Even when we return home those tasteful memories travel with us.

There is nothing quite like a bookshelf full of cookbooks. Each book is a veritable garden ready to yield its harvest of flavors. You can walk though their colorful pages and dog ear a future recipe. Or go back and dig up a favorite recipe; lovingly stained with the oils and spices of an earlier celebration.
